Maya women from the villages of Chichicastenango, Sololá, Nahualá, and Santiago Atitlán create these wonderful dolls by making a handwoven body (fabric in rich brown tones) which is woven on a foot loom. After that, they weave the doll's clothing , which mirrors their own traditional dress called, Traje on backstrap looms in their home villages. Then, the women come together in the Maya Traditions workshop in Panajachel where they finish the dolls, filling, sewing, affixing the hair and dressing them. The Maya Doll project has been a source of pride and steady work for these women who do every step of the production by hand.
